Yeah - Day of the Jackal obviously springs to mind. Oddly enough, I was rooting for the Jackal.
I thought of another potential hidden reason for this staged event, which is that if they got wind of a possible genuine assassination event then getting theirs in first effectively neutralises the intended genuine one (they can introduce appropriate security measures and round up the usual suspects etc.).
Then again, I may be doing more thinking right now than is good for me...
