There is a limit to what computers can do, but it's way beyond binary choices. Three in binary is 10, no problem. Computers excel at finding signals in complex data sets.

You suggest one reason for binary choices in the form of Divide and Conquer.

A second reason may be the promotion of "quick thinking". If you are in danger or afraid, the brain quickly chooses between Fight or Flight, for example. When you "think slow" you evaluate multiple options using thought processes like reductive or holistic reasoning. To steer us, our shepherds place us in "quick thinking" mode, and provide two alternatives that both suit the shepherds.

I was just writing a list of what we can do about our being "transitioned" in to an Orwellian world when this article popped into my inbox.

"...we simply need to look in the mirror and take personal responsibility. Only when we understand that it is our duty as human beings to think critically and question everything will we be ready to truly cooperate" goes straight to the top of the list! Everything else will follow.
